Canyon Crisis
Made in 2 weeks for #LOWREZJAM 2023!
Play as a cowboy amidst an alien invasion! Run through an endless canyon saving cows, shooting aliens, and trying to stay alive in the canyon heat!
Controls
- Arrows – Move character / change menu option
- C – Fire gun / select menu option / restart level
- P – Open PICO-8 cartridge menu
- (within PICO-8 menu) arrow keys & ENTER to navigate menu
Game Features
- Stamina system! The bar on the right indicates how tired you are from the canyon heat! You lose stamina every second just from how hot it is. Additionally, taking a step or getting hurt by alien attacks also reduces your stamina. Pick up the pink orbs dropped by barrels or aliens to refresh yourself!
- Ammo system! Your revolver can only hold 6 rounds at a time! Refill it by collecting ammo packs found on the ground or in barrels.
- Rescue cows! Aliens are hungry for beef and will explode near cows! Run into cows to score points and put them safely in your pocket.
- Endless canyon! As long as you can beat the heat, the canyon keeps going!

Challenge yourself to survive as long as possible and rack up those points! Take a screenshot of your results and brag to your friends about how awesome you are.

This game is super cute and fun to play! Some of my friends have really enjoyed trying to get new records on this game, and the replayable nature of the game is really appealing! Really cute art and music too! Yeeeehaw!

Fantastic game! Though I will admit that it needs a few tweaks such as an alarm when when your health gets low and a cowboy death animation. But for a game made in 2 weeks, this is great! I hope to see a newer version/sequel of this game in the future! :D

I saw some clips of this game on Discord, and it was the first one I wanted to try. The pixel art is nice and the animations for spawning, shooting, etc. are very fluid.
Although, the main issue for me is the layers of rng. You need to hope you don't go several screens without finding ammo, find lots of barrels, don't get softlocked by level gen, hope barrels and aliens drop anything at all, and even if they do, hope they drop what you want.

It went smoothly (if claustrophobic) until I got stuck without ammo, a barrel in front, a cactus on the left, and aliens spawning in on the right. It fell apart VERY quickly.

Such a fun game to play! I really like the art in the game. Nice work, Jammigans! The game mechanics are fun. Thanks for the “heads-up” prior to objects spawning. The HUD was well-designed and helped me keep track of ammo well.
I’d love to see this game with a larger screen resolution in the future. I feel like the characters and objects in the game world deserve a larger space, but it works fairly well in 64x64 screen size.
The CRT feature was cool. I hadn’t seen that before. Overall, I thought the game was well-done and fun to play. Great jam entry, all! Save those cows!!!

Very fun game! The art is absolutely adorable, I loved being able to save the cows haha. The music was perfect for it and reminded me of arcade games as a kid. Great job to the team!
